In the Alexander technique we use the term ‘back and up’.
Imagine you pick up the telephone to type a message.
Most people go to the screen with their focus.
And not just with their focus, but with their body: result, the posture of a shrimp with crooked head, neck and upper back.
And where do that focus and body go: forward and down, where the screen is.
Just see for yourself, how often you go forward and down with your focus.
Pretty much all day in fact!
In the Alexander technique, we think the contrary: back and up.
For instance: you think your back long and wide.
Or you think about the space around you and behind you while you look forward and down to your screen.
Or you think up through your spine.
All those things help counterbalance for forward and down focus.
Another thing you develop with this is a better awareness of your back.
You start to live more ‘in your back’, instead of only in the front part of your body.
You start to experience your body more as a threedimensionale volume.
And that, in turn, has impact on your breathing, because breathing needs volume to function well.
And when you breath is free… Yes, then there will be space for all kinds of things!
Do you want more back awareness, more freedom in breathing and more space? Then Alexander technique may be something for you! Feel free to check out my website.
